Ian Sollom MP's Health Survey

Ian Sollom, Liberal Democrat MP for St Neots and Mid Cambridgeshire, is calling on the Government to take urgent action to improve local health services after his survey uncovered a raft of issues faced by patients, including worsening health due to delays in treatment.

The survey, which was launched in September and completed by over 500 people found:

  • Over 50% found it difficult to get a GP appointment.
  • 70% had waited over 2 hours and 34% had waited over 4 hours in A&E
  • 40% of people said they had experienced a delay or cancellation of treatment/surgery
  • Nearly 50% of respondents have a current surgery waiting time of more than a year
  • Nearly 50% of respondents aren't registered with an NHS dentist
  • Nearly 50% have paid for private dentist treatment

Ian launched his health survey after being contacted by over a thousand local people about health services since being elected as MP. He was keen to find out more about what the main issues facing constituents are, as well as more details about their experiences.

Since being elected in July 2024, Ian has spent a lot of his time in Parliament fighting for better health services for constituents including regularly contacting the Secretary of State Wes Streeting, having meetings with Ministers, asking questions in the Commons and taking part in key debates on a range of issues. These have included:

  • Campaigning for the community health hub at Northstowe and medical centre in Wintringham;
  • Called for the expansion of Bourn and St Neots Almond Road GP surgeries, which was successful;
  • Demanding fully funded hospice and palliative care;
  • Calling for improvements to mental health services especially for autistic people and those with learning disabilities;
  • Representing and supporting families whose children were harmed by the Addenbrooke’s paediatric surgeon;
  • Campaigning for improvements in dementia and Alzheimer’s care;
  • Raising concerns around the abolition of NHS England and subsequent reduction in ICB staffing levels;
  • Pressing for a national cancer plan, as well improved treatment and research for a range of cancers.

Ian has also met with many constituents in his weekly surgeries, as well as GPs across the constituency and held regular catch ups with the local Integrated Care Board (ICB) and hospital trusts. He has visited the hospitals serving local people, as well as been out with ambulance crews during their shifts and met with the Air Ambulance team.

He recognises that progress has been made in areas such as cancer care and that hospital trusts are working hard to make improvements in emergency and planned care but says more needs to be done.

Ian said: “Since being elected as an MP, I have been contacted by an overwhelming number of people facing a range of problems accessing vital health services. Some of the experiences I have heard about are truly awful with many people suffering from worsening ill-health due to the delays and cancellations to appointments and operations.

“Over the coming weeks I will be highlighting in more detail some of the major issues faced by local people that were raised in the survey results. And I will be continuing to work with local NHS partners and organisations to find ways of making improvements to our health services, as well as putting pressure on the Government to bring about vital changes in our area.

“I urge anyone experiencing problems with local health services to get in touch. I will take up every case and keep pressing the Government for the changes our area needs.”
